Thursday Evenings at The Westmoreland
Date:
Westmoreland Museum of American Art
The 1930s: A Decade of Challenges
Collector Jason Schoen will host a gallery talk of his exhibition, Concerning the Thirties in Art: Paintings from the Schoen Collection. The exhibition will be Jan. 24 through May 16 at The Westmoreland. Schoen will share his perspective on American art created in the 1930s, his personal experiences about living with his collection, and the relationships he developed with the artists whose work he collected. The first painting of the Depression era entered the personal collection of Schoen in 1979, and marked a turning point in the way he collected art of the period. “My goal was to create a collection of regional art which seen in its totality can serve as a study collection and introduction to an era, as a slice of life and a window onto an importantperiod in American art.”
Schoen has a B.A. degree in art history from the University of Texas. He attended one of the first symposiums on social-realism under Ken Prescott and has done graduate American Art studies at the University of Arizona, Tucson. He chose the University of Arizona because of the Leonard C Pfeiffer Collection, one of the most important collections of American scene paintings at a university museum. His personal collection, Coming Home, American Art 1930-1950, has been exhibited at seven museums in the south. Schoen has lectured on American scene painting at Telfair Museum of Art, Savannah, Ga.; Georgia Museum of Art, University of Georgia; Lowe Art Museum, The University of Miami; Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Nashville, Tenn. He has vigorously pursued his passion for collecting American art of the 1930s and 1940s for more than 25 years.
